Life-threatening flash flooding will continue and major river flooding will develop from the South into the Ohio Valley this weekend. Severe storms could also produce tornadoes, wind damage and large hail, especially in parts of the South.

A stalled weather pattern continues to linger across the Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys. It will trigger another round of severe storms on Saturday afternoon. Tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds and flash flooding are all possible into the evening and overnight hours. Cities like Shreveport, New Orleans, Memphis, Little Rock, Paducah, Nashville and Louisville are in the zone for potentially dangerous weather. This front will finally move east Sunday, shifting the threat eastward as the system loses some of its punch. Stay weather aware and have a plan to seek shelter quickly when warned.

Severe flash floods swept across southern Missouri, impacting cities including West Plains, Van Buren and Springfield. In West Plains, streets were overwhelmed by more than 7 inches of rainfall, leaving vehicles submerged. Van Buren saw a rare emergency alert as rescue teams responded to rising water. Flooded roads near Springfield-Branson National Airport, including Melville Road, prompted officials to urge caution and preparedness across the region.

A portion of the country across the Midwest and South faces multiple days with the threat of severe weather and flash flooding thanks to an upper-level blocking pattern from a high-pressure system in the Atlantic near the Southeast. Because of this pattern, the front has gotten stuck in these regions, with no relief expected until the high-pressure system moves eastward this weekend.
